Entertainment Centers: Needs vs. Wants
by KristinG Wednesday, September 12, 2012 4:35 PM

When it comes to our desires for entertainment, people can get a little carried away. Blame it on the hedonistic society we live in or on the proliferation of options available to us. Wherever you choose to place blame, the fact remains that we take our entertainment very seriously. So, when it comes to our own homes it can be tricky to decide what’s a need and what’s a want when it comes to our entertainment centers.

Does the fact that you have an entire wall available mean that you need to use the entire space? Does the fact that you have an enormous television disqualify you from classy styles in furniture? The answer to both of the above questions is no. You can get a classy, elegant and aesthetically pleasing entertainment center whether you have a tiny TV box or a huge multimedia system. It’s simply a matter of knowing what you’re looking for. The key to keeping it rational is listing what you have and what you need. If you have a TV, DVD player, Stereo system and a collection of DVD’s then you’ll only need medium sized center. Whereas, if you have all of the above in addition to some DJ equipment that needs to be stored and a cable box and internet router system, you’ll need a larger center. What you don’t need is to buy a huge media center “just in case.” That’s asking for trouble later on!

The Classy Home has a variety of sizes and styles to choose from and, as with all our selections of unique furniture, the price is hard to beat.

Fixing A Small Tear In Your Leather Sofa
by KristinG Tuesday, September 11, 2012 4:33 PM

Leather sofa sets give class and comfort to a room. They immediately impress visitors while giving you an unbelievably comfortable sitting area. Their warm colors, shiny appearance and universal appeal all work to lend these sofa sets an air of elegance that you simply don’t get without leather. That said, their price tag is no drop in the bucket. And while it makes sense to shell out the money to purchase one, it does not make sense to buy a new sofa because of a small tear. Repair small rips or tears yourself by following the steps below.

  1. Start by cleaning the area around the tear with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol.
  2. Using a scalpel, cut away the uneven or worn edges of the tear. This makes it easier to repair the damage.
  3. Place the canvas cloth from your leather repair kit into the tear with your tweezers, making sure it’s completely inside the tear and lying flat.
  4. Apply a dab of glue from the repair kit to the area between the tear and the cloth. Using a toothpick, press down lightly to secure the cloth to the sofa. Let dry for several hours.
  5. Add a thin layer of leather filler to the tear. Dry for 5 minutes after each layer and repeat until the tear is 75% filled.
  6. Apply two coats of leather color to the tear with a sponge. Blend outward for the most natural look. Apply and blend until you get the desired color.
  7. Let dry for up to ten minutes. Then sand the paint with 1200-grit sandpaper until smooth.
  8. Finally, apply another layer of color. Let dry. Apply a sealant on top for top quality.

Follow these steps and you should be good to go – without spending another couple hundred dollars on a new sofa set

Entertainment Centers Have to Change, Too
by dolanm Tuesday, July 24, 2012 2:25 PM

Entertainment technology has changed a lot in the last decade. Flat screen televisions are nearly omnipresent in the modern home, digital technology is always increasing its reach, the internet continues to sync with new objects and devices, the mp3 player has shrunk the stereo system, video game consoles are more and more popular, tablet and other mobile devices are increasingly able to act as central hubs for numerous outlets of external media, and the cables, ports and connections are new.

If entertainment and its respective technology has changed, so must entertainment centers. An entertainment center is an often forgotten piece of home decor, one that not only acts as the main regulator of much of our leisure time, but a central piece that can define an entire room, setting the tone in its style and structure and placement. Entertainment centers today need both to accommodate new technology and match modern tastes. An Acme Furniture entertainment console, for example, easily houses a flat screen television, cable box and other devices, with ample room and space for cords and connections to travel and interconnect without hassle. Whether you're streaming a movie on the internet or recording a show on DVR, whether you're remotely skipping a track you don't like or turning up the volume on one you do, the right entertainment center can make all the difference.

Protect Furniture from the Sun
by KristinG Monday, June 4, 2012 10:23 AM

When you go outside in the summer it's a good idea to wear sunscreen. No one thinks anything of it or that it's weird to put on sunscreen. We do it because we don't want to turn into lobsters, get skin cancer, or be uncomfortable when we move around. It's equally not weird to be worried about the sun's effect on our furniture like sofa sets and entertainment centers.

A good way to avoid this is to make sure that all of your furniture is not sitting in direct sunlight. If you have a window that gets direct sun for a majority of the day, setting a sofa there will ensure that it turns a different color. Move it to a shadier place where you can enjoy it for years to come. When the sun is directly hitting one spot on the carpet for a long period of time, the carpet will turn different colors. It usually will bleach out to a lighter shade of the original carpet color but sometimes can turn white or a gross yellow color. The same thing can happen with your furniture. While it's mostly noticeable on your cloth and fabric furniture like sofas, chairs, and ottomans it's affects can be seen on wooden furniture too.
